Train derails, 1 dead, 25 injured

1  dead, 25 injured as 11 coaches of Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express derail near Nergundi station in Cuttack

In a tragic incident near Nergundi station in Cuttack district, Odisha, on Sunday, eleven coaches of the Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derailed, resulting in the loss of one life and injuring twenty-five others.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:54 AM in the Cuttack-Nergundi railway section of the Khurda Road division, under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Railway Corporation (ECOR). Upon receiving the news, senior railway officials, including the ECoR General Manager and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Khurda Road, promptly rushed to the scene. Additionally, accident relief and medical relief trains were dispatched to provide immediate assistance to the affected individuals.

An express train has been designated to facilitate the transportation of stranded passengers to their intended destinations. In accordance with this initiative, comprehensive helpline numbers have been disseminated to train passengers and their respective families. Additionally, dedicated help desks have been established at Bhubaneswar, Bhadrak, and Cuttack railway stations.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation. Currently, our primary focus is on diverting stranded trains on this route and providing essential amenities to affected passengers at the incident site. A specialized train will be dispatched for their evacuation, as announced by Ashok Kumar Mishra, chief public relations officer of ECoR.

As a result of the derailment, three trains have been rerouted.
